Client / Arts Council England – South East Regional Office
Budget / Confidential
Stage / Completed 2010
Won in Competitive Interview 2009, and completed in August 2010, this project for the Arts Council England’s South East regional offices required a strategic and sensitive approach.
The client’s newly introduced staff working policies demanded a carefully planned space, with a very specific relationship between different employees, while at the same time avoiding any overbearing hierarchy. Bespoke joinery; combining storage, lighting and utility functions; acts as visual portals between the transient working spaces and permanent working areas. These elements have been carefully positioned to imply subdivision without separation; their design and placement reinforcing circulation routes and providing a shifting relationship of uninterrupted views, narrow glimpses and foreshortened perspective. The apparent layering of the visual field encourages an appreciation of movement and parallax, and on occasion has encouraged a theatrical occupation of the space.
